2008

The 4th Annual South Asian Chef Competition (SACC) had kitchens sizzling.

Top chefs across UK participated to spin their spatulas, loop their ladels and prime their pots to pit their culinary skills against other masters of the art of South Asian cooking to win a place in the national finals of SACC with a £1,000 winner’s cheque, plus other fabulous prizes for the runners up.

Results from the National Finals are:

1st place Anand George, Mint & Mustard, Cardiff
2nd place Prem Sherma, Jimmy Spice, Birmingham
3rd place S Ramamoorthy, Renaissance Hotel, London
  
They were asked to whip up delicious, well-presented dishes using original recipes in a bid to carry off the prestigious accolade. Chefs had the chance to wow a panel of food experts with tantalising tikkas, blistering baltis and mouthwatering murghs.

Chefs were tested at  the regional heat culminating in an edge-of-seat  cook-off at the famous, Leeds Thomas College, where the judges chose the three most outstanding cooks as winners.

The competition, which aims to encourage chefs to be creative and adventurous with their recipes, is open to professional chefs able to produce South Asian Cuisine from all culinary and cultural backgrounds currently working in restaurants, hotels and for food manufacturers.

High-profile SACC awards recognise outstanding achievement in all areas of culinary skills. It also helps to raise the profile of the restaurants participating and brings companies to the attention of  UK’s leading businesses attending SACC’s glittering national awards dinner held  October 13th.

Runners Up
Joe Pathak from The Fullarton Hotel Glasgow, Man Lung Lai from The Red Panda Restaurant in Belfast and Sharu Vinuchakravarthy from The Heathrow Sheraton Hotel; all demonstrated very high standards in cooking and presentation.

Everyone received a crystal trophy and a framed certificate. The winner took home a winner’s trophy, a cheque for £1,000 and will receive full media exposure in the UK and Europe. The second and third places received £500 and £250 respectively.

The competition organisers would like to thank the panel of judges chaired by Michael Quinn MBE. Michael’s team included award winning chefs Cyrus Todiwala MBE, and Udit Sarkhel, along with Robert Cockroft, food critic Yorkshire Post Newspapers

The 2005 winner Kaushey Patel seen here being presented with her second prize by Daniel Clayton, National Sales Manager (North) of Electrolux, who kindly provided a mini combi-oven to add to the catering equipment in Prashad’s Bradford restaurant kitchen.

Kaushey also received £1,000 for winning the 2005 competition and will be going to the Ethnic Food Exhibition in Paris in June just days after the 2006 Regional Finals which take place in six colleges across the UK.

The Northern Regional Final is to be held at Bradford College on Tuesday 13th June. The SACC organisers are particularly grateful to Bradford City Council and the Telegraph & Argus for their continued support of the Northern Regional Final. The last day to register and submit menus and entries for this years competition is 12th May
